Help! My Dell laptop won't power on!
Someone on the fediverse helped me find the solution to this after I complained about the issue in a panic.
One day, I was minding my own business puttering around on my computer, when the screen goes black. Weird. I go to turn in on. Nothing. Weirder.
I plug it in. No charging LED, no keyboard backlit, no display, no fan spin. Not good. Very not good.
I search online for fixes, nothing works. I chat with Dell support, they want to send it back. I post to the fedi and get a reply right away:
What kind of power issues? How is it acting up?
@souldessin@noagendasocial.com comes to my rescue.
Ok, I worked on the earlier models if those series, a lot.
First, check for any damage, if the port has any damage (especially inside) take a photo and attach it.
If not; pull the battery, and then pull the power supply from the wall and the laptop. If you have to, unscrew it all to disconnect the battery. There are self resetting fuses in the mobo, battery, & PSU.
Leave it for about 30 minutes and then JUST plug the PSU in and try powering it.
We can go from there.
Take off the bottom cover, disconnect the battery, let it sit. Boom, it fires right up.
Yay!
I worked in a repair shop and it was always funny when someone would come in and tell me that their laptop was dead and I would plug it in and it turned on.
I would always tell them that laptops, "just like me." The real truth is that the 15-20 minute drive in, with everything disconnected, was enough to reset those fuses. Rare for a customer, but common for a tech.
Thanks to @souldessin for the fix.
No thanks to Dell. The issue popped up a couple more times before the laptop died outright. Think I must've gotten a defective motherboard. It was under warranty, so I got it replaced, but still a nuisance.
