For those of you using Linux, here's a tool worth adding to your belt:

It does exactly what it says on the tin, quickly and easily spins up a temporary wifi hotspot, great for grabbing a mac address from a stubborn smart home gadget or making a temporary wireless access point from your ethernet connection.

It's probably not malware, but, use at your own risk of course.
